71-year-old delivery driver attacked and robbed of van and almost 100 parcels

A 71-year-old delivery driver was attacked and had his van, filled with parcels, stolen.

Richard Hill was pushed into a hedge after approached from behind by two men.

The incident happened in north Cardiff on Monday morning.

The pensioner, who is a part-time driver, had to then walk home as his phone was still in the van meaning he could not call anyone for help.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said they were investigating arobbery of a delivery driver in Ash Grove, Rhiwbina.

Mr Hill was making deliveries at around 9.30am when two men pushed him into a hedge before jumping into his van.

Mr Hill said he had his keys taken from his hands before the robbers made off with the vehicle containing 86 parcels.

The force of their attack ripped the gloves he was wearing to protecthimself from coronavirus.

The incident happened on Ash Grove in north Cardiff.

Shaken but undeterred, Mr Hill returned within the day to complete more deliveries using a family car.

The silver Fiat delivery van was found abandoned hours later in Pentrebane with all the parcels emptied.

One of Mr Hill's family members said they had told him he should stop doing deliveries during lockdown but Mr Hill would "have none of it."

Ian Francis, Mr Hill's distant cousin, said he leant the delivery driver his car so he could carry on working the next day.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said they were investigating therobbery of a delivery driver in Rhiwbina.

They said: "The 71-year-old man was walking back to his vehicle ataround 10.15am on Monday when he was grabbed from behind and his keyswere stolen from his hand.

"The two suspects drove off in his grey Fiat Doblo which contained a number of parcels.

"The vehicle was later found in Pentrebane and is being forensically examined.

"Officers have been carrying out house to house enquiries and checkingCCTV to identify those responsible."
