Pictures show coronavirus testing facility being set up in Cardiff City Stadium car park

A coronavirus testing centre is being set up at Cardiff City stadium to help fight against the spread of Covid-19.

The drive-through centre is currently under construction in the car park of the Bluebirds' ground.

It is hoped the centre - which is being run in partnership with finance firm Deloitte - can help meet the UK government target of carrying out 25,000 tests per day.

Pictures showed lorries delivering portacabin-type units and workmen setting up awning roofs at the site.

Tests are expected to be carried out at the centre by appointment only by the end of the week.

A spokesperson for Public Health Wales said they are currently in communication with Deloitte over how best to use the facility.

The spokesperson said: “We are aware that Deloitte are currently setting up a coronavirus testing centre in Cardiff City Stadium.

"Deloitte’s are working with the UK Government to deliver the UK-wide coronavirus testing of key workers, and the site at Cardiff City Stadium is part of that project.

"Public Health Wales are working with them to see how we can use the facility.

“This is in addition to our existing programme of testing healthcare workers in Wales, which has been running since 18 March, and has already seen around 1,500 tests carried out on healthcare workers.”

The football ground at Leckwith is not the first sporting venue in Cardiff to be given a new purpose following the coronavirus outbreak.

Work is currently underway to convert the Principality Stadium into a 2,000-bed field hospital.
