Welsh Government to get £475m extra funding to support those affected by coronavirus

The Welsh Government will receive £475m extra funding to support those affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

The money is aimed to support vulnerable people, businesses and vital public services, including the NHS, through the outbreak.

The announcement comes after Wales' first coronavirus death was confirmed.

It was also confirmed on Monday that a Welsh Ambulance Service crew member tested positive for the virus.

The UK Government is providing at least £1.5 billion to all devolved administrations for their COVID-19 response.

The funding comes in addition to extending Statutory Sick Pay and providing a Business Interruption Loan Scheme, among other measures according to the UK Government.

Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak, said he was able to spend £18 billion in response to the coronavirus outbreak, due to "responsible management of the economy over the past several years".

He said: “We will do what is right to help businesses and individuals in every part of the UK.

"That is why we announced a special funding package at the Budget last week to support those affected by Covid-19."
