Welsh actor Taron Egerton takes home Golden Globe for Elton John portrayal
Welsh actor Taron Egerton has won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elton John.
He took home the Best Actor award in a musical or comedy motion picture, beating the likes of Daniel Craig, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Eddie Murphy.
He said playing Elton John in the film Rocketman was the ''best experience'':
The film tells the story of Elton John's life, from his years as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music through his influential and enduring musical partnership with Bernie Taupin.
The star tweeted a photograph on Monday morning with the music legend alongside the caption, "Bloody hell".
Sir Elton also won the best original song prize for I’m Gonna Love Me Again from Rocketman.
Following his win, Taron was interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter with his two younger sisters Mari and Rosie, who he brought along to the ceremony.
He said he felt "absolutely elated, overjoyed. It is such a wonderful culmination of what's been a great journey of my life. I wish I had the words to say how pleased I am."
Taron previously revealed he had never really played the piano before being cast in the film and described it as a "frantic period of strengthening my voice and trying to learn the rudiments of piano playing".
"It is my great privilege to play him and it's something I'll be proud of and remember for the rest of my life".
Taron Egerton grew up in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, and considers himself Welsh "through and through". The star later moved to Aberystwyth and is also a Welsh speaker.
In July, he stunned the audience on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a rendition of Calon Lân.
