Wales' Christmas dinner habits revealed

Roast potatoes top the list as Wales’ must-have Christmas dinner element followed by parsnips and meat gravy.

Wales is the parsnip’s biggest fan but Britain's is divided in its opinion on mashed potato.

Figures released for Christmas reveal that less than half (47%) of people in Wales have mash on their plates today compared to 75% in the North East of England.

Wales’ favourite Christmas dinner plate has also been revealed and it’s a traditional turkey dinner with all the trimmings.

In the survey people were asked:

"If cost and time were no issue, which, if any, of the following would you include as part of your personal "perfect Christmas dinner" plate?"

Surprisingly cranberry sauce made it into the top ten.

  • Roast potatoes 93%

  • Parsnips 79%

  • Meat gravy 78%

  • Carrots 77%

  • Brussels sprouts 73%

  • Stuffing 72%

  • Turkey 68%

  • Pigs in blankets 65%

  • Yorkshire puddings 61%

  • Cranberry sauce 57%

Wales is the only region in Britain to include cranberry sauce on its Christmas dinner top ten, with more than half opting for the sweet sauce.

Wales is also the most likely region to choose parsnips, with over three quarters saying the festive root veg would appear on their perfect plate (79%) - a stark comparison to those in Scotland, of whom only half would opt for them (55%).

MATURING PALETTES

The survey also showed clear differences in opinion depending on when you were born.

Three quarters of 18 to 44-year-olds included Yorkshire puddings in their ideal Christmas dinner, compared to just half of over 55s.

And when it comes to spouts, the older you get the more you enjoy them.

Less than half (48%) of 18 to 24-year-olds wanted Brussels sprouts while for more than three quarters of over 55s (78%), Christmas isn’t complete without this traditional trimming.

MAKE MINE MEAT FREE

The younger you are the more likely you'll be to opt for a meat free dinner.

Almost one in four 18 to 24-year-olds picked meat free gravy (24%) and only 9 per cent of over 55s would choose a nut roast.
