Prison officer jailed for having 'highly inappropriate relationship' with inmate at HMP Berwyn
A prison officer who had a "highly inappropriate relationship" with a prisoner has been jailed.
Mold Crown Court said 27-year-old Ayshea Gunn, a graduate in Criminology and Psychology from Johnstown, Wrexham, "put her desires first and had exhibited selfishness on a staggering scale" by having the relationship with prisoner Khuram Razaq.
Razaq is currently serving twelve years for conspiracy to rob at HMP Berwyn in Wrexham.
Prosecuting barrister Simon Mills said Gunn had been a probationary officer at the Category C prison which had 1,200 inmates and 500 staff at the time. She began working there shortly before the prison opened in February 2017 and had training including in security awareness and corruption prevention.
Using prohibited mobile phones, the court heard more than a thousand calls were exchanged between the two, some with explicit sexual content.
The offence came to light because Gunn had been spending so long inRazaq's cell and prison management was informed and an investigation started.
Gunn pleaded guilty to a charge of misconduct in public office between July and November and was sentenced to a year in prison.
Razaq, dealt with separately, must serve a consecutive eight months jail term after he pleaded guilty to possessing a Garmin smartwatch and a mobile phone in jail.
