Game of Thrones' Iwan Rheon urges Future Generations Commissioner for Wales to put nature first
Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon has written a letter to the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Sophie Howe, urging her to put nature first in her upcoming report.
The 2020 report will set out what the Commissioner thinks should be a priority for the Welsh Government in order to create a better future for Wales.
In his letter, Iwan says "when I come home to Wales now, I no longer hear the symphony of bird song and numbers of animals that I remember."
WWF Cymru have backed the letter, asking people across Wales to do the same by sharing their thoughts on social media on why nature should be protected.
In Iwan's letter he reminisces about what Welsh wildlife and countryside used to be like and the stories his "Taid" told him of how many birds and fish there once were in Gwynedd.
He said: “it is imperative that we preserve the wealth of beauty held in our small nation.
Rheon added "I want to be able to share that Wales with my son – one full of nature. But Welsh nature is in a fragile state. Despite some success stories, our wildlife continues to decline."
In a recent survey carried out by WWF Cymru, they found that 68% of Welsh people said they are concerned future generations will suffer from a decline in the natural world.
Jess McQuade, Head of Policy WWF Cymru, said nature is integral to life support and should not be seen as "just a pretty addition to enjoy on a weekend walk".
