Brothers sentenced after knife attack outside Cardiff mosque during Ramadan
Two brothers have been sentenced for their roles in an attack involving a knife outside a mosque in Cardiff during Ramadan.
Luke Thomas, 20, and Liam Thomas, 18, both admitted their parts in the incident that happened by Dar Ul-Isra Mosque in Cardiff during the early hours of the morning on June 2 2019.
Luke Thomas has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and for possession of a bladed article.
Liam Thomas has been given a suspended sentence of 18 months for affray for 18 months.
The Judge also gave Mr Thomas 250 hours unpaid work, 35 sessions of thinking skills and 20 days of rehabilitation activity requirement. He'll also pay £500 in compensation to be paid £10 a week.
The attack took place at the mosque and Muslim Welfare and Education Centre in Wyverne Road in Cathays just after 1.20am on Sunday June 2.
The court was shown CCTV footage from the night of the attack. It shows the men approaching on their bikes and from another angle attacking members of the mosque.
CCTV from the main entrance of the mosque showed members of the mosque running in fear as the men approach.
The Judge, Nicola Jones told the court: "This took place outside a place of worship on one of the most holy days for that religion.
"Clearly it would have been terrifying for those inside with vulnerable people present, including women and children.
"But I accept these were the actions of drunken intoxicated louts. I accept they were not racially or religiously motivated."
