Seal rescued after being found in 'unusual' spot on top cliff

A month old seal pup was found on top of a 50 metre high sea cliff in Pembrokeshire on Sunday.

The RSPCA, who were called to the scene, said that the seal had “various puncture wounds to her body” and it was an “unusual place to find a seal as she must have travelled some distance up the steep incline.”

The Animal Collection Officer suspects the seal got there by squeezing her way through a gully further down the coastal path and coming up a steep incline.

The seal was extremely underweight for her age, 14kgs, and had lost her fluffy white coat. She is now in a wildlife centre for rehabilitation.

What do you do if you spot a lonely seal?

  • Seals are weaned from their mothers early on in life so they are not necessarily in danger.

  • Do not chase or move seals found on the beach into the water

  • If they look fit and healthy, monitor for 24 hours from a distance.

  • If they look injured or distressed contact the RSPCA 24-hour line 0300 1234 999

  • Keep a safe distance as they can bite.
