A family from Bettws in Bridgend have reduced their electricity bills by £700 by installing greener and more efficient heating and insulation in their home.

As well as a new efficient boiler, Mark and Hannah Tierney had their home retrofitted with a Tesla battery and solar panels, which now provides them with 95% of their electricity.

A smart temperature control device installed in their home helps to cut waste.

The non-gas boiler is more efficient than their old one and it's made a big difference to how much energy they use to heat their home.

The work was done through a partnership between Wales and West Housing Association and Cardiff University to retrofit homes with greener technology and heating systems.

So far, five homes have been completed using funding from European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), and 17 others are being worked on.

Over the next 30 years, 300,000 council and housing association tenants could see their gas boilers and cookers removed and better insulation fitted to their homes to make them greener and more energy efficient.

A report published this month for the Welsh Government called 'Better Homes, Better Wales, Better World' says the move will lower fuel bills, improve air quality and create new jobs and skills.

Top five tips for how to reduce your energy bills:

  • Turn off standby appliances

  • Install a smart thermostat

  • Install a new boiler

  • Wash clothes at a lower temperature

  • Invest in double glazing

The report was commissioned by Welsh Ministers last year and has been produced by an independent Advisory Group on the Decarbonisation of Homes in Wales.

The report made clear that Welsh Government needs to lead many others - and organisations, communities and individuals will need to play a part.
