One dead following garage explosion in Pontypool

A man has died following an explosion in a garage in Pontypool.

Emergency services including South Wales Fire and Rescue and South Wales Ambulance responded to a call at 11:10am following reports of an explosion on the Coed Camlas estate.

Tiles were seen missing from the roof of a property

Gwent Police said the explosion happened in a property's garage and has caused "significant damage".

The explosion was not related to the mains gas network, Wales and West Utilities confirmed.

Neighbour Annette Jackson said she heard a "very loud explosion"

Neighbour Annette Jackson told ITV News, "I heard a very loud explosion. I came running through - by then you could see flames coming out of the garage and lots of black smoke."

Two houses are said to have been evacuated on the Coed Camlas estate.

Formal identification is yet to take place and Gwent Police said it is too early to confirm whether the death is suspicious.
