Murder investigation launched following death of woman in Nelson

A woman found dead at an address in Nelson near Caerphilly has been named as Janet Hoskins.

Emergency services were called to a property on High Street in the village of Nelson at 10:40pm on Wednesday evening. The 67-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 70-year-old local man initially arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder has now been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Gwent Police say the death is currently being treated as suspicious.

A neighbour described the street as 'a quiet area where everyone is friendly'.

Neighbours living nearby expressed their shock at seeing police in the street:

“I can’t get over what is going on. We didn’t see anything last night. At 7am I opened the curtains and I could see the police van and the forensics and that’s what shocked me".

Another neighbour said she was shocked to see police vans and people in white overalls outside the house.

She said: “It’s frightening to think of what has gone on. This is a quiet area, busy with traffic, and everyone is friendly".

Mrs Hoskins' family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Police are reassuring the community that they are dealing with what they believe to be an "isolated incident". Officers are appealing for information.
