Three Russian sailors were rescued by the RNLI near Flat Holm Island after going missing on their way back from Barry.

They left their cargo ship moored two miles off the Somerset coast before heading to the Welsh town but got lost in foggy conditions on their way back in a 13ft inflatable boat.

An extensive search took place by five RNLI lifeboats and a coastguard helicopter this morning after they were reported missing.

They are thought to have left Barry at 3:45am but the alarm was raised when they had not returned by 7am.

They were found 'safe but very cold' by Penarth RNLI volunteers at around 8.30 on Wednesday morning.

All three sailors were well enough to return to land.
