Heart issue forces Newport defender Fraser Franks to retire

Newport defender Fraser Franks has retired from football due to a heart issue.

Newport County said Franks has been forced to end his playing career on medical advice.

The 28-year-old joined the club at the start of the season and played in the Exiles' much anticipated games against Premier League Leicester City and Manchester City.

Franks said he is 'devastated' by the decision but memories like captaining Newport in their win over Leicester City will 'live long' in his memory:

Franks has played 320 games during his career for AFC Wimbledon, Welling United, Luton Town, Stevenage and County, scoring 19 goals.

For Newport, he has made 34 appearances for Newport - netting three goals. However he hasn't played since February 19.

In a statement, Newport County said they 'doing everything they can' to support the defender and his family.
