'It was the best weekend of my life' 82-year-old Maureen heads to first ever rugby game - and ends up meeting players

Wales' stunning victory over England will be a memorable occasion for many people in Wales.

But none more so than for Maureen McColl.

Saturday's Six Nations showdown in Cardiff was the 82-year-old great-grandmother's first every rugby match.

Maureen was there in the crowds wearing her red jersey with pride.

After the final whistle, which saw Wales triumph over England 21-13, Maureen's day was made even more special when some of the Welsh substitutes took time out to say hello.

Maureen told the players how much she enjoyed the match

The retired factory worker, who went to the match with her sister Nancy, has spoken out about the moment that has resonated with thousands of rugby fans.

Maureen took a seat in the stands and met a young couple, friends of Wales flanker Aaron Wainwright, who were waiting to chat to the Dragons player after his warm down.

"I said wasn't that a fantastic game - I'm 82 years of age and I've never been to a game", Maureen, from Fair View near Blackwood, recalls.

"They were looking at me as if to say 'we've got to give her a treat'.

It was at this point Natalka Leszniwskyj and her boyfriend Aaron Hossack asked Maureen if she would like to meet one of the players.

"I thought he was having me on", Maureen says. "I said I'd love to.

"The girl helped me down the steps to the field and Aaron came. I said it was fantastic - a gang of them came then!

"They were all standing with Aaron in a row. I said 'it was fantastic, well done'.

"I think I did most of the talking.

"I was so excited. I don't think they could get a word in."

After meeting the players, they were happy to pose for a few pictures.

"I never go anywhere without my little camera. They call me David Bailey.

Maureen, who has 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, said her family had told her what to expect at the Principality Stadium.

"I love rugby, but on TV. I was a bit daunted in the beginning.

"It was exciting, I was up in my seat standing, I really enjoyed it. The atmosphere was wonderful.

"I had my shirt on with the Welsh dragon, and a red coat with a daffodil, I put red earrings in.

"I went the whole hog.

"My first match, and Wales won. And it was marvellous.

"I'm so proud to be Welsh. It was so good.

"I've got my ticket, I'm going to frame that."
