'Be aware' warning issued for snow and ice in Wales

Snow is falling in many parts of Wales.

Some schools and roads have been closed.

A Met Office 'be aware' warning of snow and ice for the whole of Wales is in force.

Police in North Wales are advising not to travel in Blaenau Festiniog where the snow is heavy.

There are several reports of accidents and vehicles becoming stuck in the adverse weather conditions.

The A44 is blocked. There are hazardous driving conditions due to snow between Prospect Place (Aberystwyth) and A470 (Llangurig).

The A487 is closed. It is reported that several cars are stuck between Bank Street (Machynlleth) and A470 (Cross Foxes, Cross Foxes Inn).

The Met Office has said snow, possibly heavy at times, will develop overnight on Tuesday and into Wednesday. It will turn icy.

What to expect:

  • Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services

  • Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

  • Probably some ice on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths

Around 20 schools have been closed across Wales.

This includes 11 schools in Gwynedd, 2 in Flintshire, 1 in Denbighshire and 1 in Conwy.

Welsh Water / Dwr Cymru is urging customers to make sure their homes are prepared for the cold weather.

Severe cold weather can cause water pipes to freeze and burst – leaving homes and businesses with no water, low pressure or even flooding.

It said businesses, schools and buildings like community centres or chapels are particularly vulnerable to burst pipes during the winter.
