A ''sorry-looking'' Christmas tree erected in a town square in south Wales has been met with criticism by residents.

The tree in question, located just outside the Civic Centre in Port Talbot, has been lambasted by residents for looking ''sad'' and ''dead.''

While those living in the town may be directing their criticism towards Neath Port Talbot Council, they have had no part in the decorations this year.

Since 2014, the council decided they would no longer fund Christmas decorations in the borough, deciding instead to reallocate the money to other year-round public service priorities.

Ever since that time, it has been up to locals themselves to arrange them.

This year, Aberavon Rugby Club have pulled together to provide a bit of festive spirit to the town.

While the tree has not been to everyone's taste, it is the result of local volunteers and donations. The tree itself was donated by Adrian and Nicola Richards and came from a supplier in Cwmavon.

Speaking after the official switch on last Friday, chairman of Aberavon Rugby Club Andrew John, thanked those who donated their time and effort to provide the town with the decorations.
