Police have confirmed that a robbery took place at the Blaenavon Heritage Railway on Wednesday night.

A safe containing cash to the estimated value of £12,000 to £14,000 was taken.

Gwent Police confirmed that the incident took place between 10:00pm on Wednesday night and 9:45am on Thursday morning.

The Blaenavon Railway had hosted four days of Halloween celebrations before the burglary which they say caused 'thousands of pounds' worth of damage' to doors and windows in the railway museum.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Blaenavon Heritage Railway said they were "truly devastated, disheartened and drained" to announce the break-in.

Gwent Police confirmed on Friday that the incident took place on Wednesday night or in the early hours of Thursday morning and that investigations are ongoing.

A fundraising page for the railway has already raised £5,000 pounds from donations.
