Plaid Cymru promises 'deeds not words' in encouraging more women into politics

Plaid Cymru's Westminster leader says the party is taking a 'deeds not words' approach to improving the number of women in politics.

Liz Saville Roberts has highlighted a series of measures including 'twinning' constituencies and creating a national register of female candidates.

The moves come just a week after a leadership election in which Plaid Cymru members overwhelmingly voted to replace their own female leader, Leanne Wood, with Adam Price.

Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts became the party's first female MP and now leads the parliamentary group. She backed Adam Price in the leadership election.

The technique of twinning has previously been used by Welsh Labour to select more women candidates. It was controversial in some areas and the use of all-women shortlists caused problems in some constituencies, notably Blaenau Gwent.
