Giant 'thank you' statue arrives in Swansea to commemorate WW1 veterans
People in Swansea have been paying their respects to the First World War generation who served and sacrificed theirs lives 100 years ago.
The Royal British Legion created an 8ft high 'Thank You' installation which is in place at Knab Rock in Mumbles.
It is the final stop of a UK-wide tour.
‘Thank You’ aims to honour not only the 1.1 million British and Commonwealth Armed Forces who lost their lives, but all those – military and civilian – who played their part on the home front.
The artwork brings to life the key reasons to be thankful by honouring the impact on arts and culture, the role of pioneers such as military doctors, and the collective contribution of women, children, the Commonwealth and the Armed Forces themselves.
The back and sides of the installation are blank, allowing the public to sign their own ‘Thank You’ messages on it.
One of the people paying their respects was Geoff Rhys whose grandfather and brothers fought in the Great War.
The letters are painted with pictures of people who played all kinds of roles in the First World War.
The Royal British Legion hopes the artwork will encourage people to find their own ways of marking the anniversary in November.
