Children and Social Care minister Huw Irranca Davies is the latest AM to say he would like to succeed Carwyn Jones as First Minister.

During a launch in his Ogmore constituency, he placed expanding childcare and early years education at the centre of his bid.

He served as an MP in Westminster before switching to Cardiff Bay in 2016.

Any AM wishing to stand needs the nomination of five fellow Labour Assembly members to get onto the ballot paper.

When asked if he had the required nominations Mr Irranca-Davies said “I’ve received a lot of encouragement from colleagues” but didn’t confirm any supporters.

Finance Secretary Mark Drakeford, Health Secretary Vaughan Gething and Welsh Language Minister Eluned Morgan have declared their wish to stand for Labour leader and First Minister, ahead of a contest in the autumn.
