"Mexican standoff" doesn't help Plaid Cymru says senior AM

A senior Plaid Cymru AM says the party needs to determine who'll lead it into the next Assembly election in 2021. According to Simon Thomas "now is the time to settle" the matter and he described the current situation as a "Mexican standoff" with no one yet publicly challenging Leanne Wood. Simon Thomas said he supports the current leader.

The window to challenge the Plaid Cymru leader closes on July 4th with Rhun ap Iorwerth seen as a potential challenger. But the Ynys Mon AM told journalists last week "he wasn't planning" to put his name forward.

Three other Plaid AMs have written to fellow members of the party's group in the Senedd urging a challenge:

If a challenger emerges a contest will take place during the summer with the result declared ahead of the party's autumn conference.
