Wales' wealthiest revealed in rich list

Sir Michael Moritz is the richest person in Wales.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, published this Sunday, Cardiff-born private equity billionaire Moritz has wealth of nearly £3bn.

Moritz, 63, is a partner in the Silicon Valley firm Sequoia Capital.

The firm provided funding to Yahoo!, PayPal and WhatsApp.

Moritz has seen his wealth rise by £334m in the past year.

According to the list, the richest group of people in Wales added an £1.039bn to their bank balances this year, with a cumulative wealth of £11.417bn.

The Perkins family, owners of Specsavers, increased their wealth by £100m.

This year the company sold 20 million pairs of glasses, 425 million contact lenses and 338,000 hearing aids.

The only person near the top of the Wales Rich List to lose money this year is Sir Terry Matthews. His wealth declined by £95m to £1.075bn.

Matthews, 74, is regarded as one of Wales’ most successful entrepreneurs, with much of his early wealth from telecoms in Canada.

In 2010, he brought golf’s Ryder Cup to the Celtic Manor resort in Newport.
