Man jailed for knife attack on police officer
A 36-year-old man has been sentenced to four years in prison after attacking a policeman with a knife.
Tony Buttigieg, from Caerleon, was found by police officers in the hallway of residential flats in possession of two large kitchen knives.
Police said he appeared to be under the influence of "either alcohol or some other intoxicating substance" and was making threats to harm himself and the officers.
Body worn video shows the moment Buttigieg began to lash out and attempted to stab PC Rhydian Jones on at least three occasions.
Officers used a taser device and the knives were taken off him.
He was charged with the attempted murder of PC Jones but pleaded guilty to the charge of attempted grievous bodily harm.
Gwent Police said the incident was "traumatic for all those involved".
Last month, PC Rhydian Jones, PC Gareth Marsh and PC Ashley Cotton received a Chief Constable’s Commendation for their bravery when responding to the incident.
