Death of prisoner at HMP Berwyn 'likely' due to drug Spice

An inmate who died at a super-prison in Wrexham may have taken the drug Spice, an inquest revealed on Monday.

Luke Morris Jones, 22, was found dead at HMP Berwyn on the evening of March 31. He was rushed to Wrexham Maelor Hospital after being found unresponsive and despite efforts to save him he died about an hour later.

At a hearing in Ruthin, Coroner David Pajur said that following a post-mortem examination the provisional cause of death was a “cardiac event” which was likely to have been linked to his use of the drug spice.

Further toxicology and histology tests are to be carried out and an investigation by the Prison and Probation Ombudsman will be completed.

The funeral of Mr Jones will take place on April 13.
