'Filthy' restaurant fined after inspectors find 'greasy sludge' on walls and floor
This is the greasy sludge inspectors found on the floor and walls of a Mumbles restaurant which was described by Swansea Council officials in court as 'filthy' and 'unacceptable'.
Food hygiene inspectors told Swansea Magistrates they had given restaurant owner Numan Ibrahim Ali several chances to improve standards in his business.
But the court heard Ali had failed to act and ended up in court where inspectors described the kitchen of Chutney's restaurant in Newton Road as 'filthy', with grease and food debris covering the floors.
The court heard that equipment used to prepare food was also in poor condition and a knife stored in the kitchen was found encrusted in old food.
Ali, of Fairwood Road, West Cross, pleaded guilty to 11 offences, contrary to the Food Hygiene (Wales) Regulations 2006.
He was ordered to pay £6,713 in fines and costs.
Mark Thomas, Swansea Council cabinet member for environment services, said: “The advice of our officers was ignored and we were given no option other than to carry out a prosecution against the owner of the business.
“We will not stand by and allow food related businesses to continue operating in unacceptable hygiene conditions.
“I welcome this latest case and hope it sends a message out to food businesses in Swansea that they need to do all they can to operate a clean and safe business where customers are not put at risk.”
