Lord Richard of Ammanford has died aged 85. His death yesterday was announced in the House of Lords and peers were told that they will get the chance to pay tribute to their former leader on Tuesday.

As well as leading the Lords for the first year of Tony Blair's time as Prime Minister, he had been British Ambassador to the United Nations during the 1974-79 Labour government and also served as a European Commissioner. As chairman of the Richard Commission, he was responsible for a report calling for many additional powers for the Welsh Assembly.
