Vet's warning as another dog dies after suspected Alabama Rot

Vets are warning Alambama Rot could be on the rise in Wales as another dog dies.

It's a disease which causes clots in blood vessels, it can lead to kidney failure which can be fatal to dogs.

John Hartland from Barry's dog Rufus died two weeks ago, vets said it was a suspected case of Alabama Rot.

Symptoms of the disease include sleepiness and being sick
John also has two other dogs.

It can also cause ulcers and sores on the dog’s paws, legs, face or mouth.

Vets are carrying out research into the disease but currently aren't aware of the cause.

It's thought to occur in woodland and muddy areas.

Vets advise pet owners to wash mud off their pets after walks and check them thoroughly.

Symptoms to look out for:

  • Being sick

  • Not wanting to eat

  • Lethargy

  • Ulcers

  • Sores

  • Lesions

Not all dogs who have skin sores go on to have kidney problems but early treatment by a vet is really important.

If you notice any sores on your dog, speak to your vet immediately to rule out Alabama Rot.

Vets also advise if Alabama Rot has been reported near you, avoid walking your dog in muddy woodland areas.
