Smacking is "ineffective and outdated" and parents shouldn't do it. That's according to the Welsh Government who want to ban it.

The Children's Minister, Huw Irranca-Davies says he wants to reiterate that physical punishment of a child is "no longer acceptable" in a modern, progressive Wales.

The Welsh Government says physical punishment goes against their commitment to giving all children the best possible start in life.

Watch the report from Mike Griffiths below:

Speaking at a conference on "Promoting positive parenting" in Cardiff, the Minister says the way parents support their children in their formative years is more important than other factors such as social class or family structure.

Ministers are currently consulting on plans to introduce legislation which would ban smacking in Wales.

The NSPCC and a group of Welsh parents will also highlight the importance of a positive approach to parenting at the event.

The group will talk about their experiences on promoting positive parenting.
