Welsh Labour deputy leader hopefuls go head to head in Sharp End special tonight

Carolyn Harris and Julie Morgan are both hoping to become Welsh Labour's first deputy leader

The two politicians hoping to become Welsh Labour's first deputy leader will go head to head on ITV Cymru Wales tonight.

In a special edition of Sharp End, I'll interview Julie Morgan and Carolyn Harris in the studio together, the first chance they'll have to set out their stalls in a broadcast debate.

The encounter comes just a week before Labour members receive their ballot papers.

Whoever wins the contest will work alongside Carwyn Jones to lead a Welsh Labour party which now has a greater say over the way it operates within the UK party.

It could be a challenging time for the new deputy leader, with the First Minister facing a series of inquiries about his sacking of the late minister Carl Sargeant and the handling of allegations made against him. That's led to speculation that he could be forced to step down from the top job earlier than he planned.

There's been controversy too over the way that the deputy leader will be chosen, using the electoral college system instead of one member one vote now used to choose the party's UK leader and deputy leader. Some members want that decision overturned.

The winner of the deputy leadership contest will be announced at Welsh Labour's conference next month.
