The Welsh Government has announced a new action plan to help people living with dementia in Wales.

It is estimated that up to 50,000 people in Wales are living with the condition and with an ageing population this number will increase.

£10m a year will be spent with the aim to help people living with dementia live as independently as possible in their communities.

The money will increase the number of support workers and train them in new ways of caring. It will also aim to increase rates of diagnoses and build a stronger working relationship between social care and housing.

The new plan will also help fund community led projects. One example is a gardening project between pupils and older people at Grow Rhondda.

Health Secretary Vaughan Gething said he wanted Wales to be a dementia friendly nation

Sue Phelps from Alzheimer's Society Cyrmu welcomed the news.
