Jack Sargeant wins Alyn & Deeside by-election for Labour

The son of the late Carl Sargeant has won the Alyn & Deeside by-election and will take his father's seat in the Welsh Assembly.

Jack Sargeant, who's 23, increased Labour's majority by more than a thousand votes, although turnout was just 29%, down from 35% in 2016.The Conservatives held on to second place and the Liberal Democrats, who came fifth in 2016, overtook Plaid Cymru to take third place. UKIP, who came third last time, did not contest the by-election.

  • Carrie Harper Plaid Cymru 1,059 6% -3%

  • LABOUR MAJORITY 6,545

  • TURNOUT 29%

  • SWING 5% Conservative to Labour

In his victory speech, Jack Sargeant spoke of how his family remains devastated by his father's death. Carl Sargeant apparently took his own life after he was sacked from the cabinet by First Minister Carwyn Jones. He was then suspended from the Labour party over allegations about his personal conduct.
