Welsh opera about Chinese takeaway cancelled by London venue because of 'non-Asian roles'
A London theatre has emphasised its commitment to diversity after cancelling a performance of a Welsh opera due to its cast of non-Asian singers.
A statement shared by Hackney Empire said it took the decision to withdraw the performance of Golden Dragon, because it 'compromised' the organisation's aim to 'champion diversity and accessibility across the theatre industry'.
The move comes just weeks before the production was due for the stage on October 31, which would have marked the finale of its autumn tour.
The venue said despite the cancellation, they would be willing to work with Music Theatre Wales to help 'increase diversity' in the opera world.

Responding to the decision, Music Theatre Wales expressed its disappointment and acknowledged that it had 'made mistakes' but its performers 'were not to blame'.
