Health board defends decision to remove online videos

A health board has defended its decision to remove its own social media videos - critical of some of its hospitals - after ITV Wales asked for more information about them.

The YouTube clips, featuring interviews with staff at Bronglais and Glangwili hospitals were posted by Hywel Dda University Health Board in the last 14months as part of the organisation's efforts to be 'open and honest about the challenges' it faces 'day in, day out'. But after ITV Wales asked for more information about them, they were removed. The health board says it was 'spring cleaning' its channel and this is part of 'normal processes.'

One of the removed videos was about Glangwili hospital. It featured views from one nurse working on its Cilgerran children's ward. In the clip, she talked about ward bays being too small and facilities 'not built for purpose'. The health board says it is continually working to make improvements.

Children's services are being centralised in Glangwili - away from Withybush in Pembrokeshire.

Hywel Dda University Health Board says the video was intended to be shown in a public board meeting in March 2016 but says that technical issues meant it couldn't be shown. It was then shown at an April 2016 board seminar meeting where no public were present.

Campaigners against the centralisation of children's services - and who say they they attend every public board meeting - say they were unaware the video existed. They questioned why it was not shown and why it wasn't shown to the public at the next public board meeting.

Steve Moore, the health board's chief executive said: "We've been doing a lot of public engagement...I think the public can feel confident that we're out there engaging, talking very honestly about the issues we face but also talking about the real improvements that our staff are making every day."
