A collectible five-pound note engraved with a tiny portrait of author Jane Austen has been found in Wales.

News emerged this week that one of four special notes, potentially worth thousands of pounds, had been spent in a cafe in Blackwood and could be in anyone's pocket, purse or wallet.

Today micro-artist Graham Short, who is behind the portraits, confirmed on his website today that the first note had been discovered 'deep in the heart of Wales'.

Three other five-pound notes, also bearing tiny Jane Austen portraits, have been circulated in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

In order to circulate the note in Wales, Mr Short spent it on a coffee from the Square Cafe in Blackwood as his mother is originally from the town.

Mr Short works on his pieces by night and wears a stethoscope to engrave the portraits between heartbeats in order to maintain absolute stillness.

His tiny 6mm portraits of the novelist are accompanied by a quote and appear next to the image of Big Ben on the new polymer notes.

The portraits are so tiny that in some lights you can't see them at all, while the quote is only visible under a magnifying glass.

Mr Short's tribute to the literary great is timely as next year is the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's death.
