Wales pays tribute on the 50th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster

The people of Wales are paying tribute to the victims of the Aberfan disaster today.

It's exactly 50 years since 150,000 tonnes of coal waste collapsed on to the village, killing 144 people - including 116 children.

Wales' First Minister, Carwyn Jones, called on everyone to observe a minute's silence at 9:15am to remember those who perished.

MP for Cardiff Central, Jo Stevens, also showed her support.

Abercarn Primary tweeted to show their respect for the victims.

And it hasn't only been people in Wales acknowledging the 50th anniversary.

Retired English footballer, Stan Collymore, gave this dedication.

A survivor of the disaster spoke to Good Morning Britain earlier today about his memory of the day.
