Wales manager Coleman to receive Freedom of Swansea

Wales football manager Chris Coleman is to be honoured by Swansea later, by receiving the Freedom of the City and Council in a special ceremony.

Coleman, who led the national side to the semi-finals of Euro 2016 in July, will be offered the award in a ceremonial meeting of the Full Council of Swansea at the city's Guildhall.

A special scroll will also be prepared for the the 46-year-old, who was born in the city in 1970.

Other Welsh football legends who received the award include John Charles and Mel Nurse.

Chris Coleman factfile:

  • Born in Swansea in 1970.

  • Attended St Joseph's RC Primary School and Bishop Vaughan RC Comprehensive.

  • Played for Swansea City 160 times and Wales 32 times.

  • After leaving Swansea in 1991, he went on to play for Crystal Palace, Blackburn and Fulham.

  • After retiring as a player, he had spells as manager of Fulham, Coventry and Spanish side Real Sociedad.

  • Appointed Wales manager in 2012 after the death of friend and previous national boss Gary Speed.
