Ian McKellen: Pride Cymru 2017 uncertainty is 'disturbing'

Sir Ian McKellen has described the uncertainty surrounding next year's Pride Cymru event, held annually in the Welsh capital, as "disturbing news".

Originally known as the Cardiff Mardi Gras, the yearly celebration of equality and diversity has taken place in Cardiff since 1999.

But Cardiff City Council has announced that although they have not "cancelled" the event, there are "challenges" with the proposed date for 2017.

Sir Ian, who is currently starring in a production of Harold Pinter's No Man's Land at Cardiff's New Theatre, has recorded a video message in which he described the uncertainty as "alarming", adding that he hoped "something goes ahead".

Cardiff City Council said in a statement that it has supported Pride Cymru since it first began, adding that their Events team are "currently assessing all alternative possibilities".
