Two Newport gardeners are heading to California to share their secrets for growing giant vegetables.

They've grown six-foot-wide cabbages and 11 stone marrows. And now, world record holders Kevin Fortey, 38, and Ian Neale, 73, have been invited to a US conference to give their top tips to other gardeners.

Pensioner Ian Neale has in the past shared gardening secrets with hip hop star Snoop Dogg - but this will be the first time he gets on a plane.

While out there, the pair will also judge a giant pumpkin growing contest.

For the first time in their lives, Kevin and Ian are leaving their treasured vegetable patches in the care of family. Kevin says he will skype them regularly because they are being left with a big task - in more ways than one.

The pair fly out tomorrow.
