Twitter mix-up as football fans congratulate US actress Ashley Williams on Everton move

American actress Ashley Williams has received dozens of tweets congratulating her on her move to Everton - after fans confused her with footballer Ashley Williams.

Everton fans bombarded the How I Met Your Mother star with well-wishes after former Swansea City and Wales skipper Williams completed his £12m move to the Toffees.

But she took the mix-up in good humour and even fired off some tongue-in-cheek responses to fans:

Adding to the confusion - or perhaps because of it - the official Twitter account for Everton comes up alongside the actress' profile when a search is carried out.

But in a tweet to her followers, the 37-year-old later clarified that she was not the 31-year-old footballer, joking that she is "terrible at soccer".

She also had to change her Twitter bio to avoid any further mix-ups...

...although, at time of writing, well-meaning Everton fans are continuing to tweet their congratulations.
