'We just can't forget' - Wales prepares for the Battle of the Somme centenary

An overnight vigil will be held at Llandaff Cathedral on Thursday night to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and honour those who fought in the largest battle of the First World War.

It will end at Cathays Park at sunrise with gun fire and whistle blowing to signify the moment soldiers went over the top.

Mike Griffiths has been to two communities in the South Wales Valleys which are preparing to mark the commemorations.

350 of the poppies will also been taken to Mametz to be placed on graves for the commemoration ceremonies next week.

The loss of so many men hit hard in communities across the country.

Risca lost 260 men in the First World War

In Risca, they've set up an exhibition to remember the local men who died during the war.

Though the veterans of the war are no longer with us, these groups want to make sure they - and those who lost their lives - are not forgotten.
