Queen tells AMs she has no doubt they will 'continue to succeed' as they face new challenges

The Queen has opened the fifth Assembly telling AMs their 'responsibility is great and expectations are high.'

Her Majesty arrived at Cardiff Central station with Prince Philip and travelled down to Cardiff Bay where she was met by crowds of wellwishers.

During her speech to Assembly Members, the Queen said she had been following the progress of the Assembly closely and it can be proud of the reputation it has established for itself.

Her Majesty gave a speech to gathered AMs wishing them every success in the future.

A 21-gun salute was fired outside the Pierhead building at when the Queen's train arrived in the city's station and a royal salute given as the Queen reaches the main entrance to the Senedd building.

Her Majesty was met with a guard of honour before she proceeded through Y Neuadd to the Siambr.

The formal opening ceremony included a performance by the National Youth Choir of Wales and a student will read a specially commissioned poem.

Schoolchildren were among the wellwishers to greet the Queen in Cardiff Bay.
Prince Charles was also in the Bay for the Assembly opening.
