New laws come into force today to help police tackle psychoactive substances.
Under this new legislation, it is now illegal to sell so-called 'legal highs'. It is an offence to produce, sell import or export psychoactive substances and those who do will face up to seven years in prison.
Psychoactive substances are any substances intended for human consumption that is capable of producing a psychoactive effect, replicating the effects of banned drugs. Exception include legitimate substance, such as food, alcohol, tobacco, caffeine and medical products.
Police say they hope the new legislation will give them more power to take action against those who produce or supply the potentially lethal substances.
New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) also fall under this new legislation.
