Wales welcomes Budi the Sumatran Tiger

A Sumatran Tiger has become the newest resident at The Welsh Mountain Zoo in North Wales.

Budi, a two-year-old male tiger has made the journey from London Zoo to breed with another tiger at the facility.

Keepers at the zoo hope a romantic relationships will blossom with four-year-old female tiger, Kinnara. It's suggested that the two are getting on very well and Budi is settling in to his new home.

Budi was one of three cubs born at London Zoo in 2014 whilst Kinnara has lived at the Welsh Mountain Zoo for two years and was born in Krefeld Zoo, Germany

Five facts about the Sumatran Tiger:

  • The Sumatran Tiger is a rare tiger subspecies that from the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

  • It has been listed as Critically Endangered.

  • The stripes on the Sumatran Tiger are closer together than those found on any other species due to the high grass in their natural habitat.

  • They are smaller than other species of tigers with a full grown male only about 300 pounds - but they can reach up to 8ft in length.

  • One of their best tactics is to chase their prey into the water.
