Council called 'daft' for installing two seaside benches the 'wrong way'

Council officials have been blasted "daft" after installing two benches at a seaside facing the wrong way.

Walkers wanting a seaside sit down in Porthcawl, near Bridgend, cannot take in the stunning coastal views because the seats face a road.

And the decision to point the benches away from the beach has been branded "daft".

On a clear day visitors at Porthcawl's popular Esplanade are treated to amazing views of the Bristol Channel and can even make out the coast of Somerset and Devon.

But instead of looking out to sea - the new backward-facing bench allows them only to marvel at a busy road and the hotels which run along it.

The benches are believed to cost around £500, and replaced two older benches which fell into poor condition.

Bridgend County Borough Council defended the new bench, claiming it offered visitors an "alternative view" of the seafront.
