Takeaways and alcohol among 'treats' fuelling pet obesity in Wales
Snacks, takeaway leftovers and even alcohol are continuing to fuel an obesity crisis among pets in Wales, according to leading veterinary charity PDSA.
38% of dogs in Wales are said to be fed table scraps or leftovers as their main meals - the highest figure in the UK and greater than the average of 28%.
The data suggests a UK-wide issue, with 5.5 million cats, dogs and rabbits across Britain being fed treats every day, which the charity's vets are warning could be drastically shortening life expectancies.
One third of dogs and a quarter of cats are now classed as overweight or obese, with the PDSA predicting that the problem will continue to grow and warning that many overweight pets may go on to develop potentially life-threatening conditions such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.
