750 jobs are to go at the Port Talbot site, as Tata tries to improve its competitiveness in the UK
Tata Steel has confirmed it's cutting 750 jobs at its Port Talbot steelworks, and a further 300 at other sites across the UK.
The company says the job losses are part of cost-saving proposals to 'improve the competitiveness of its UK business.'
In a statement, Tata said that alongside the 750 jobs at the Strip Products UK business in Port Talbot - this could include up to 150 jobs at Llanwern - there will be further cuts of 200 jobs in support functions and 100 at steel mills with around 15 jobs going at Trostre and others Corby and Hartlepool. It says it will start consultations with unions immediately.
Tata Steel says it is looking at how it can provide support to communities affected by the announcement and help 'stimulate' new job creation in those areas.
