A teenager from South Wales helped to save her grandfather's life when he severed an artery on a broken wine bottle.

Allen Hooper, 72, was cleaning his wine collection in Blaina when he cut open his forearm after a bottle shattered in his hands.

He severed an artery and his quick-thinking granddaughter Piper Meredith rushed to his aid using her first aid training as an air cadet.

14-year-old Piper had learned to treat wounds and wrapped her grandad's arm in kitchen roll before raising it above his head before he was taken to hospital - something which doctors said saved his life.

Allen is recovering after being treated at Nevill Hall hospital in Abergavenny, South Wales. He said: "Piper just knew what to do. I'm very grateful."

Piper's squadron flight lieutenant with the 275 Nantyglo and Blaina Squadron Air Training Corps Paul Maitland said: "She's one of our rising stars really in the squadron. She just soaks in all the training.

"Without her having that training, she might have known what to do but she wouldn't have the confidence."
