Cathedral marks 75 years since Blitz bombing raid
Llandaff Cathedral is marking the 75th anniversary of a blitz raid which killed 167 people in Cardiff and devastated the cathedral.
The bomb which hit on the night of January 2nd 1941 tore off the roof and caused extensive damage.
It turned out to be one of the most severe attacks on any UK Cathedral, apart from Coventry.
Remarkably no one on site was killed, and the Dean and head verger, who had been on fire duty at the time, managed to escape.
But elsewhere in the city that night the blitz killed 165 people and injured hundreds more. Around 350 homes were also destroyed.
After the raid, the cathedral underwent a major programme of restoration, and it was another 17 years before the whole building was back in use.
The place where the bomb fell, just outside the grounds of the cathedral, is now a garden of remembrance for those who have died.
Today a special service will take place to mark the anniversary.
