Thousands braved the wild weather this afternoon to take part in the annual Saundersfoot New Year's Day Swim in Pembrokeshire.

The event, now in its 32nd year, has helped raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for local and national charities since it began.

Organisers say 1,587 swimmers and thousands of spectators turned out this year - many of them in fancy dress.

Highlights included a large-scale Star Wars 'swimship' with all the characters; Mrs Brown’s Boys, and Saundersfoot School as ‘Millions of Minions’.

The very first swim was on Boxing Day in 1984, when just a handful of locals entered the sea for charity.

The following year, the swim was moved to New Year's Day, when it has taken place ever since.
